Variation of soil organic carbon across different land covers and land uses in the greater Gaborone region of Botswana

چکیده

Soils are a potentially viable sink for atmospheric carbon and could contribute to mitigating global climate change. Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) content exhibits considerable spatial variability both horizontally (land use) vertically (soil profile). Land cover land use (LCLU) is one of the key determinants SOC stock, hence there significant variation across different LCLUs. This study aimed investigate LCLUs in Greater Gaborone region Botswana. Remotely sensed data used image classification was obtained from United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earth Explorer (www.usgs.gov). The imagery this Sentinel-2A month March with cloud less than 10% easy interpretation. Image done using supervised method based on Maximum Likelihood classifier. major LCLU types identified area included water bodies, trees dominated, cropland, shrubland, bare land, built-up. Walkley Black method, core Bouyoucos hydrometric pH meter were determine content, bulk density, soil texture pH, respectively. sand fraction showed negative correlation while silt clay positive correlation. total stock estimated be 4.36 MtC, dominated areas accounting 1.13 MtC (25.9%), shrubland 2.83 (64.9%), cropland 0.14 (3.2%), built-up 0.22 (5.1%), 0.04 (0.9%), indicating that good sequesters Gaborone.

The Effect of Different Land Uses on New Indices of Soil Quality in Central Alborz Region

Different land uses have various effects on the changes of soil properties. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of natural forest, needle-leaved plantation and rangelands of central Alborz on new indices of soil quality (i.e. organic matter stratification, carbon management index and soil biological activities). For this purpose, eight samples from organic layer (litter) and m...

The Effect of Land use and Soil Erosion on Soil Organic Carbon and Nitrogen Stock

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is a principal component in soil quality assessment. Knowledge of SOC and total nitrogen (TN) stocks are important keys to understand the role of SOC in the global carbon cycle and, as a result, in the mitigation of global greenhouse effects. SOC and TN stocks are functions of the SOC concentration and the bulk density of the soil that are prone to changes, influe...

Soil-Borne Microbial Functional Structure across Different Land Uses

Land use change alters the structure and composition of microbial communities. However, the links between environmental factors and microbial functions are not well understood. Here we interrogated the functional structure of soil microbial communities across different land uses. In a multivariate regression tree analysis of soil physicochemical properties and genes detected by functional micro...
